What is hidden beneath a smile is still a smile.

When we started this blog, one of reasons we wanted it for was to translate some of Yu Wo’s blog posts for our English readers. This post is from December 13th, 2010. You can find the original here: http://www.wretch.cc/blog/kim1984429/13526672.

What is hidden beneath a smile is still a smile – translated by Eilinel

After I said that the inspiration for my books usually comes from things that happen in my daily life, I recently received a question asking me if the muse for the Sun Knight’s difference in perceived and actual personality came from my own experiences.

I think I should explain it here, or else when everyone sees me smiling, they might wonder whether or not I’m swearing  in my heart. XD

The difference in personality for Sun Knight, or I should say, the Twelve Holy Knights indeed came from my own experience. And yes, the inspiration also came from autograph sessions.

If anyone has attended my autograph sessions before, they should know that I basically keep my smile going for the entire duration of the session.

The longest session went on for 6 hours, with only a 10 minute break in the middle for me to drink some water and go to the restroom. So yes, I did smile for 6 hours.

If you are free, you can try smiling for 6 hours as well and see how you feel…

Haha, the readers always say that my smile seem to be stiff. They aren’t mistaken, my face is indeed stiff.

After smiling for 6 hours, naturally my face muscles will protest. XDDD

But, even if my face isn’t stiff from all the smiling and trying to keep my image up (chatting with the fans for N hours as I sign the books) and waving my hands until they break, it will definitely be sore the next day… Even if I (if I were Sun) have many complaints against the identity of Sun Knight, that is because I know I definitely wouldn’t give up this path of mine (as an author), so I will just use the complaints in my heart to divert my attention (from the pain).

No matter what, Grisia would rather die than give up being a Sun Knight, and that’s same for me.

If you want me to show a different expression instead of smiling to face the fans who come to queue up for an autograph, then I’ll tell you that I’d rather smile and let my face become stiff like a zombie.

And, please don’t plead with me to stop smiling if I’m feeling tired, because I don’t want to let people down… Maybe they came from far away places, maybe they had to persuade their parents for a very long time, maybe they have been waiting for the autograph sessions since a long time ago… And then they finally see me, greeting them without a smile.

I could never do that.

  1. Ah, Yu Wo is so nice to smile for 6 hours….

  2. Unkindness

*+9999 respect points for Yu Wo*

  3. =O So cool. Is it possible to translate every entry of her blog? (I know it might be troublesome and I sound like a stalker, but hey… it’d be kinda fun to see what she’s doing and what she’s thinking of the characters, her fans, etc…)

We might do it if we have the free time ^ ^; Most of her blog entries are re-post of her older stories or the announcement of her new books ~

  4. Demoninmysoul

Makes me want to make her laugh, and forget the stiff smile for a second… Like going to a session in a funny outfit, or something…:) I hope I’ll be able to read all her works, and maybe see her, if I can.:)

:D I like Yu Wo soooo much, she so funny and cool!! ^^ I really do admire her!! – Thank you guys for translating this! :D

  6. Thanks for translating these! :) I always wish my Chinese skills were good enough to read the originals, but lucky for me, I have you guys! To smile for six hours… is actually not that hard unless it’s a really big smile. Otherwise you can at least smile a little smile for a very long period of time without really thinking about it. (Then again, if you do that, when you don’t smile, people look at you funnily and think something is wrong with you.)

  7. Wow… I never thought about how Grisia’s character could be related to being an author. That’s pretty interesting… No wonder Grisia seems so authentic. A lot of respect to Yu Wo.

…wow, this makes me want to go to an autogragh session and command her to not smile…

But, even if my face isn’t stiff from all the smiling and trying to keep my image up (chatting with the fans for N hours as I sign the books) and waving my hands until my hands break, it will definitely be sore the next day… even if I (if I where sun) have many complaints against the identity of the sun knight, that is because I know I definitely wouldn’t give up this path of mine (as the author), so I will just use the complaints in my heart to divert my attention (from the pain).

…and waving my hands until my hands break… should be: …and waving my hands till they break…

…even if i (if i where sun)… could be: even if i (as sun)
