June 2011 Contest: Singoff and Prize Giveaways

posted in: Updates | 8

If you read the monthly update post from earlier this month, you should be aware of June’s singing competition.

Again, the categories are

  • It’s My Life – Bon Jovi
  • Swallowtail Butterfly – Mayday
  • Free Response (Pick any song you like)

The three winners will receive TWO chapters (can be one of each or two of one series). The three runner-ups will receive one chapter of their choice. Judging will be done by the staff and the deadline will be June 30. Send in your mp3s to [email protected] !

Some readers have been asking various questions, so here’s the answers to some FAQs:

Q: Am I allowed to submit entries to more than one category?
A: Sure. We’ll just accept the one we like best, so there’s no harm in two or more songs.

Q: How do I record my voice?
A: First, you should acquire an instrumental version of the song, if available. Next, you need to get a recording software. Audacity is a good, free option. There’s plenty of tutorials on how to record and mix a song using Audacity — just search on Youtube. Optionally, make sure you either have a good microphone, or apply some sort of noise-cancelling effect to reduce the level of static in your recording. (Google is your friend, but here’s a good place to start.)

Q: Where can I find the lyrics to Swallowtail Butterfly?
A: Here, you can find the Chinese lyrics with pinyin and English translation to Swallowtail Butterfly.
If you’re still having trouble figuring out the pronunciations of the pinyin, try listening to the recording done by the band.

Q: Am I allowed to get creative with my entries?
A: Sure. Remixes, mashups, English transliterations are all welcome if that’s how you roll.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to post them here.

Lastly, I’d like to remind readers who like prizes to check the Staff Blog more often. I will occasionally post some giveaways or mini-riddles to spice things up over there. There’s a random giveaway going on right now!

    Wow! I’m not good at singing, but I hope I can listen to the winners and runner ups!

    About the song lyrics, the female version and Mayday version to the song differ, so the link with lyrics is not Mayday’s version so….it’s not accurate.

    http://vocaroo.com/ is a good alternative to downloading software as well since it records, but it’s not a edited thing.

    Anyways…..I hope to participate, and not sound too bad. ^ ^

      @Winter
      We accept either version. It shouldn’t be too hard to adapt the lyrics to Mayday’s version and vice versa, right?

      If you want to get an audio editor without downloading anything, I’d recommend Myna (http://www.aviary.com/tools/audio-editor). It’s a recorder and editor in one online package. Only thing is it’s a little slow since it’s all in the browser.

      Good luck!

    am I allowed to choose a song in a language other than English or Chinese?

    • amgine

      @Moonight
      Absolutely. Please include the title and original artist of the song in your submission, so we have a reference version to compare it with.

    um….are we allowed to enter multiple entries for the same category???
    or just one entry per category, but more than one category?

    • eilinel

      You are allowed to enter multiple entries in the same category, but only 1 entry will win. So something like 1st, Yue, 2nd, Yue, and 3rd, Yue is not going to happen XD.

    Oo, a singing contest! Sounds fun~

    I would like to offer up my services as an amateur mixer for people who are completely clueless.
    You can email me at: [email protected]
    If you want a sample of my mixing, I can also give that to you..

    What I will need from you in SEPARATE files:
    * RAW Vocals (please make sure your timing is right since I probably will not know the original song)
    * BGM
    * Harmonies (if you do them) (All harmonies need to be in a separate file such that vocal tracks do not overlap)

    I can’t promise how many of these I will be able to get through as mixing takes me awhile.

    Happy singing~
